Congealing Point of Petroleum Waxes and Petrolatum
Congealing Point of Petroleum Waxes and Petrolatum TT-938
Congealing Point of Petroleum Waxes and Petrolatum TT-938 conforms to ASTM D938, the Standard Test Method for Congealing Point of Petroleum Waxes, Including Petrolatum.
The congealing point is an important property for many petroleum wax consumers. This procedure measures the temperature at which a cooling sample develops a "set" or resistance to flow. At this temperature, the wax may be solid or semisolid and quite unctuous, depending on its composition. For petrolatums, the congealing property is associated with the formation of a gel structure as the sample cools.
In this method, a sample of wax is melted, and a droplet is made to adhere to the bulb of a thermometer. Using a prewarmed flask as an air jacket, the droplet on the bulb is allowed to cool at a fixed rate until it congeals. The congealing point is observed as the temperature at which the droplet ceases to flow as the thermometer is turned.
Application scope
1. This test method is suitable for determining the freezing point of paraffin wax, including petrolatum.
2. The inch/pound units mentioned in this standard are considered the standard units, with the values in parentheses provided for reference only.
3. This standard does not address all potential safety issues. Therefore, appropriate safety and health measures should be established, and related systems and scopes of application should be determined before using this standard.
Note 1: Either this method or D127 can be used. The measured result is typically lower than that obtained with D127-LP133, and the deviation varies with the type of petroleum wax.
